I usually like reading books about the "low country" of Carolina but this was nothing more than a sappy romance with very unlikeable undeveloped characters. I felt I was reading a book written for YAs. There is no depth to the story even though the author tried to cram in all the ingredients one would expect, very predictable in a very immature way. If this is the level that adults are reading and finding enjoyment from, then our educational system is failing. Too trite, I could never fully engage. Even Lovie's character is flat and one dimensional and she is the best thing going for this novel.The only redeemable element was the discourse on turtles. Having lived in South Florida and watched this phenomena occurs is indeed breath taking and worth saving. We too had a "turtle lady" that was desperately trying to save the beach front for these awesome creatures. Unfortunately, beach front property is in great demand and though the beaches remain the turtles cannot adapt to the flood of humans. And, there are so many people who think its funny to hop on a turtle or dig up the eggs, I think, many locations will lose their ability to accommodate this beautiful "ritual" at the cost of losing yet another species to extinction.Overall, this novel was too immature and IMO would not appeal to an adult audience, even as a beach read. The story was good, but the language was very bad and unnecessary. As a Christian I will be unable to read more books by this author.
