I have enjoyed the Xanth series for years, especially the early books. The author has always had a fascination with panties, young girls who are innocent but try to seduce men and boys. Mr. Anthony comes up with convoluted reasons as to why this is Ok. At first it was cute, but now not so much. The most recent books deal with children being indoctrinated into the Adult Conspiracy aka sex. This trend started with Two to the Fifth which I found disturbing but I powered through. In that book, a 12 year old sorceress is able to age herself to be 18 so she can summon the stork with a cyborg. They end up having a daughter who ends up being sent away to await the time when her parents are older. Subsequent books weren't quite so blatant; however, this one just made me feel icky. The protagonist is a pre teen and the other children are not much older. All of them get paired up and they all go farther than children that age should ever go. It does stop short of the action of summoning the stork. Some of the kids involved are less than 10 years old. I am so sorry that I read this book all the way through. I rarely stop reading a book to the end so I made myself finish it. I sorely regret that decision. I also regret the money I spent on the stupid book. To me love is love; however, this book deals with LGBT issues in a very clumsy way. I just felt so squickly after reading this. I totally do not recommend this book. I did read in the author's notes that this will probably be his last book. As for me, I am done. I have been reading Xanth for around three decades. This series is a big part of my love of reading. So I am happy to see it still going. This book continues the ongoing story of the five portrait children. This time starring Squid the alien cuttlefish girl. I like that Xanth is becoming more inclusive by including gay and transgender characters. I really think Santo is one of the stronger male characters Piers Anthony has written. His intelligence and levelheadedness has won the day more than once since his introduction. Looking forward to the next book.
